What equipment does verizon use for routers and modems

Verizon no longer issues the Fujitsu Speedport modem or the Westell InfoSpeeed Modem.

Other than the the Westell 6110 which is a pure bridge modem, all other modems that are issued now are routing modems (they have a router built in). These include the Westell 2200,(near obsolete now) 6100, 6100F, 327W and 7500 and the Actiontec 701c and 704wg. he

The Westell 2200, 6100, 6100F and Actiontec 701c have only one ethernet port. They require a switch or hub when connecting multiple computers. The Westell 327w, 7500 and Actiontec 704wg all have iv ethernet ports and a built in wireless access bespeak.

With thanks to Bytebender for this update.

What is a microfilter?

The microfilter strips the DSL indicate from the telephone line. Using a microfilter on the line going to the DSL span (modem) means that you will NEVER GET SYNC. E'er. Please read the data that came with the organisation. The microfilter goes on all ANALOG devices
Microfilters trap or block a specified frequency in this case the range that ADSL runs at. The voice portion of your phone service works at a lower frequency than DSL. DSL is a loftier frequency signal so the lines with the POTS connections (POTS=Apparently onetime Telephone service) has to have a filter on it if it shares the same line as the ADSL service. If non and then y'all should hear a agglomeration of hissing and heavy white dissonance like when the station goes off on a Television fix and you lot see and hear the static.
The multiple high frequency carriers beating against each other cause hissing on an unfiltered DSL line. This is a adequately even and steady hiss with no pops or crackles. Filtering the high frequencies will thus cease this hissing.
Hissing that is non stopped by filters would have another crusade. Static -- sharp crackles somewhat like the crumpling of cellophane -- is *always* bad. Usually caused by faulty wiring. Whatever is causing the static *will* knock your DSL. This could be a phone. Unplug all your phones and faxes and modems; plug in a known (tested at a neighbor) good phone and test. If quiet, plug in devices until the noise returns. Remove faulty device from service. Else, if you are on the wire plan (pay your $i/month or so for coverage of inside wire and jacks) call 611 voice repair and tell them you have a problem with your line. Else, disconnect all of your premise wiring from the protector and test with your known adept phone at that point. If quiet, tie IWs down ane at a time to observe the culprit. Replace or retire the faulty IW. Else, phone call 611 and tell them you have a noisy loop.

Particular in lower right is a Line Swapper. It is used to swap the red/green pair with the yellow/black. ( 2 and iii with ane and 4).

You tin can likewise call 1-800-VERIZON (837-4966) for repair.

White Westell Firmware

The Bridge Upgrade (Westell Software Installation Utility) is a field upgrade to enable ADSL modems to support the following functions:

Configurable PVC (VPI/VCI values)
Support for 8 PVCs
Configurable Bridge Filters
Configurable Pinnacle Cell Rate (PCR)
Forrard Broadcast
Forward IP Multicast

The package comes with unlike firmware depending on the model:
A90 -> 1.10.0
B90 -> six.0.8

Information technology will brand no noticeable difference with your throughput.
Brand sure you lot have TCP/IP protocol so it can communicate with the modem and disable the firewall. Also, be sure to remove whatever routers, you want to be continued from the computer directly to the modem.
For the software to be able to come across the modem, you must set the IP / Netmask of the computer you're running the upgrade from to 192.168.i.1 / 255.255.0.0.

You will able to go dorsum to the old firmware when using the uninstall feature of the Westell utility manager, the aforementioned utility that installed the firmware. The utility did not wink the onetime firmware only retained it, Westell must take thought most this and it makes sense for recovery purposes. Do Non upgrade the modem twice, information technology will negate the back out process.

How do I make a dedicated DSL line in an flat or other multi-user abode?

Having a defended pair to use for DSL doesn't mean that a new wire must be placed. If in that location is actress pairs available in the existing wire and then they can exist used. A pace-by-stride post with pictures can be seen hither:

What is a NID?

A device that terminates copper pair from the serving central office at the user's destination and which is typically located exterior that location.

Onetime NID on left. Modern on right. Open for a illustrative purposes. Tampering with Telco equipment may consequence in fines and/or lose of service.

Antique NID Here are some older protectors that some people will still take in their homes. The one on the Left was used in the forty'due south-threescore's. The customer wire is on pinnacle (historically correct). This is where yous would install your own wiring. The fatter grayness (olive) wire on top is the basis wire. The fatty black wire on the bottom is the drib (not customer serviceable). The brass rail are shunts, which bypassed the red fuses underneath. The black bakelite (sometimes brass) circular piece is the cover for carbon protectors, which shunt whatever over voltage to ground.

The protector on the right dates back to 1914. Notice it has no shunts and however used the reddish fuses. The carbon protectors are under the brass cap. It has no wiring because it is old and I practice not want to disturb it. It lays out the same as the other.

Many homes still apply these protectors. Practice non exist afraid of them. They will not affect your DSL service and are perfectly capable of protecting your line. Y'all may want to brush off the dryer lint and cobwebs though. If you are doing your own wiring, practise not mess with the drop wire. Recollect that there is voltage on the line and it will bite you. Utilize skillful wire (cat3, no stranded or flat wire). If yous are unsure, Telephone call A PRO.

What is a splitter?

A POTS splitter uses a depression pass filter to divide the low finish
frequencies of the telephone audio spectrum from the higher
frequencies of the xDSL signals. The splitter should be a passive
device, not requiring power and then that "life-line, vocalism service can be
provided as has been in the past. This splitter allows for the
traditional vocalization service that consumers are accustomed to. A splitter
is required at both the customer premises and at the far end (CO).
xDSL that does non apply a POTS splitter on client premises is termed
"splitter-less xDSL". However, at that place actually is no such thing as
splitter-less xDSL. The splitter office in these cases is just
performed at the provider, generally the CO. Whether a POTS
splitter is required or not depends on the xDSL service being
provided.

Filter Vs splitter

A splitter is preferred over a filter. Having a splitter has been known to increase your bandwidth a little considering the filters add line length. And extra line length on an already long line can be detrimental.

FAQ by kadar

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:

  • You lot don't demand to run more wire. Y'all can use i of the unused pairs in the existing cablevision runs and just install a new dedicated jack for the DSL modem. IMO filters are junk and often the cause of poor DSL performance. Using a splitter is the way to go. With filters I was dropping connection several times a day, and syncing only at 3-5Mbps. Once a splitter and dedicated jack on the spare set of wires was installed, I went to a rock solid connexion that never drops and the total 7.1Mpbs I'thou paying for. I went for xv years not realizing how much the filters were effecting my DSL performance!

    2012-09-fifteen 02:38:07

  • So... A Filter tin exist used either on every telephone jack, or within the NID? A Filter inside the NID will human action upon all subsequent phone jacks in the house? A Splitter inside the NID will human activity upon all subsequent phone jacks in the house? And so installing either in the NID would require you to punch down a second set of phone wires throughout the firm (i for the computer and one for the telephone) AND separate the TELCO drop into two?

How do I use a router with the Westell 2200?

The Westell 2200 wired modem/router Verizon is supplying can be used in either Router or Span mode; if you are already using a router, or want to, yous need to put the modem in Bridge way or you'll have bug. Here'south how:

Beginning, connect your PC direct to the Westell 2200 with an ethernet (CAT5 or CAT5e) cable, bypassing your router. In your browser'southward accost box, type 192.168.1.1 to admission the Modem Configuration utility. When asked for user proper noun and password, enter your router's username and password (default for the Verizon issued routers is typically "user=admin, password=password"). Now, from the Configuration menu, choose VC configuration and ready the 0/35 to span mode by clicking the "edit" button and using the drib down card. Exercise not disable the 0/35. Relieve. Then, again in the Configuration carte du jour, select DHCP Configuration and turn off the DHCP Server. Log off the utility.

Skip this side by side step if y'all've already been using your router to supply PPPoE with your username and countersign already. Unplug the cable from the modem and hook it up straight to your router (so your computer and your router are now hooked up and the modem isn't in the mix). Enter your router'south configuration area (usually 192.168.2.1/?), cull PPPoE and, in the PPPoE area, alter the log on entries to your verizon username and password.

At present (almost washed!) claw a cable betwixt the modem and the router (Verizon commonly supplies i), leaving the PC to router connection in place. Reboot both devices. All should work fine at present.

How do I use a router with the Westell 6100?

The 6100 is a modem/router combination unit of measurement, meaning it contains a DSL modem and a general purpose NAT (Network Address Translation) router. "Bridging" means disabling both the public and individual side of the NAT router, thereby turning the 6100 into a simple DSL-to-Ethernet bridge, or "dumb modem".

If you are already using a router, or want to, (examples: if you already have your LAN set up and just demand to connect it to the internet; or you want to add together wireless connectivity to your connection; or you want to use an optimised-for-gaming router; or you desire to add a VoIP router), yous volition desire to span the 6100.

For optimum performance and reliability the connection should only be going through ane NAT router. When the connection goes through multiple NAT routers, troubles like NAT conflicts volition cause router lock ups and loss of connectivity, and configuring admission for things similar game consoles, VPN tunnels, remote access, server applications, security cameras, or loftier-end multiplayer games will be difficult if not incommunicable.

Near all Westells with a GUI used the white & blueish "Westell" branded firmware until onetime in 2007. I believe version 4 was the last white & blue firmware. The red & blackness "Verizon" branded firmware was rolled out in 2007. You may be running version 5 or 6.

When the Westell is bridged, information technology will have no router functions at all, no subnet, no IP, and no default gateway. The router continued to the Westell will larn and hold the Public IP accost and will make up one's mind the LAN IP addresses and subnet.

The Westell 6100 modem/router supplied past Verizon tin be used in either Router or Bridge way. If you are already using a router, or want to, y'all need to put the modem in Bridge mode or y'all'll accept issues. These instructions utilize to the Westell 2200, 6100, 6100F, 327W, and 7500 models.

• Yous should follow these instructions with i PC continued to the Westell using the supplied Ethernet cable (CAT5 or CAT5e) and that y'all are online and able to browse to various web sites. If you already had a LAN setup and were online only needed to replace your modem, temporarily connect 1 PC straight to the Westell using the supplied Ethernet cable before continuing.

• Temporarily turn off all firewalls and pop-up blockers on the PC.

• In your browser'south address box, type 192.168.1.1 to admission the Modem Configuration utility. When asked for user proper noun and countersign, enter your router'southward username and password (the default for the Verizon issued routers is typically "user=admin, password=password").

• Hither y'all may get a screen titled User Settings, this is request you to change the username and password for the Westell, invent and enter a username and a password, (tape these somewhere so you don't forget them).

If your Westell uses the white and blueish Westell firmware:

• Now, from the Configuration menu, cull VC configuration, hitting the pinnacle Edit button. In the popup, set protocol to Span.

• Then below in VC 1 Span Settings set the mode to Span.Early 6100

• Hit Set VC. Save.

• Then, again in the Configuration carte du jour, select DHCP Configuration and set the dropdown to OFF. Hitting save and log off the utility.

• Most people don't need any more than circuitous procedures, so endeavour these first. Even so, on occasion, you will demand some boosted steps, including cloning MAC addresses. If you have trouble, check out the diagrams and instructions here: »mysite.ncnetwork.net/res ··· 6100.htm

If your Westell uses the carmine and black Verizon firmware:

(Wireless Settings won't be there on the 6100 or 6100F, the left panel may be called "My Modem")
• Select the My Network icon, then select Network Connections from the left card. (Only the top two connections will be listed in the 6100 and 6100F)
• On the Broadband Connexion screen click on the words "(Broadband Connectedness DSL)".
• PPPoE customers will see this screen. If you use a DHCP type Internet connection the screen will be different, yous will have a "release" push button in the top section - use it now to release your public IP. Then, locate the VCs section, locate the line " Enabled, VPI 0, and VCI 35 ..." and click the notepad icon under Edit on the right to get to the VC 1 Configuration screen.
• In the VC one Configuration screen open up the driblet down box abreast "Protocol" and cull "Bridge". If your connection type is DHCP the Protocol should already exist "Span". Once Bridge is chosen, the screen volition change open the drop down box beside "Bridge Mode" and choose "Span", then click the Apply push button at the bottom. This has disabled the Public side of the 6100's router.
• The modem volition reset. Next y'all demand to disable the Individual side, the DHCP server - click the My Network icon again, click Network Connections from the left menu again. On the Broadband Connexion screen, click the discussion "Lan", on the next screen remove the topmost checkmark (Individual LAN DHCP Server enable), click apply or save settings.
• The aforementioned folio will return. The Westell is now bridged, the Internet light will no longer light, log off the utility.

Back to common steps:

• Power down and disconnect the PC from the Westell.

• Connect the Ethernet cable from the Westell to the port on your router labeled WAN, (or Internet). Connect an Ethernet cable from i of the LAN ports of your router to your PC. Power up the Westell, wait for the DSL light to stop blinking so power up your router, and so the PC. When the PC boots upwardly your firewalls and pop-upward blockers may be re-enabled, it may be necessary to turn them off once more.

• Skip this next stride if yous've already been using your router to supply PPPoE with your username and password.

• If your router came with a setup deejay insert information technology now, otherwise open a web browser and access the Router's GUI, usually at 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.i, or 192.168.ii.i. If the router has a Setup Wizard use it, otherwise manually configure the router for your Net connection type. (Note: most routers default to "Automatic" which is DHCP). If you connect via PPPoE you will demand to supply your Verizon Username and Password so the router tin acquire a Public IP address, if you connect via DHCP y'all may also demand to use the router's MAC cloning feature, enter the MAC address from the Westell's label and your router volition employ it to larn a Public IP address.

• Exam that y'all tin can scan to some condom web pages, then turn your firewalls and pop-up blockers dorsum on.

For a Westell E90-610015-06, endeavor the instructions in this post.

With cheers to Bytebender for aid.

  • Slap-up write-up. Information technology helped me quite a bit in setting upward my Verizon Westell 6100 and Airlink101 AR680W. I upgrated my Airlink firmware to one.01 which is available in their website. I setup the Westell per the in a higher place instruction using the Black/Reddish verizon firmware instruction. As well, I setup the PPPoE per the instruction just this didn't do the pull a fast one on. I too tried with and without the @verizon.net in the user proper name, nevertheless no die. In thursday e cease, I only left out the @verizon.net in the User Name field. Alas, this even so didn't work until I went back to the Dynamic IP (DHCP) setup and simply hit Utilise. Smash, I was able to connect to the internet. The setup for PPPoE is nevertheless there, then I'm non sure which setting is used. I did hit the Apply button to set the PPPoE data I entered as evident past the presense of the information when I went back to PPPoe setup. Note, for PPPoE setup I entered Westell MAC Accost also, per the above pedagogy. Thanks fo the smashing how-to.
